Activated charcoal: what is it?

Activated charcoal – also called “activated carbon” is based on ultra porous carbon generally obtained from materials such as bark or non-resinous wood heated to different temperatures with the addition of water vapour and oxidizing gas. This miracle recipe gives activated carbon a strong adsorption* capacity which is the basis of its reputation as an effective depollutant. Once treated, it comes in the form of powder or grains and is used for everything that needs to be purified: water, soil and even the human body since you find activated charcoal in the dosage of many drugs, including to clean the digestive system.

Note: do not confuse absorption and adsorption, which are different terms. Absorption is a phenomenon of filling one body with another, like a sponge filling with water. Adsorption is a process that binds molecules to the surface of a solid.


Air filtration and activated carbon, but also?

The more porous the activated carbon, the more capable it is of adsorbing up to 100 times its carbon dioxide volume, which is why it is considered the “super hero” of indoor air pollution control. As you can imagine, our air purifier is based on activated carbon. By binding the gas molecules to its porous structure, it adsorbs the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) responsible for the degradation of air quality in your home.


Acetoacetamide captures formaldehyde

A major enemy of air quality is formaldehyde, one of the most toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). It can be found inside our homes, particularly through DIY products (paint, varnish), wood stain and maintenance products, but also in glues used to manufacture chipboard panels. In this context, there is acetoacetamide, an organic active substance that reacts specifically to formaldehyde by being able to bind it to its structure.


Activated carbon and acetoacetamide for indoor air pollution control

For an ultra effective action, our ecological air purifier is composed of activated carbon that captures Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and acetoacetamide that specifically captures formaldehyde.

Thanks to the use of its two anti-pollutants, Blooow reduces formaldehyde by up to 44% and the other VOCs tested (toluene and n-dodecane) by approximately 30% under test conditions*.

Note that our air purifier’s adsorption technique requires no maintenance or energy consumption and does not generate any harmful by-products from activated carbon or acetoacetamide. Best of all, Blooow neutralizes the bad smells generated by indoor pollution, such as cigarette smoke.
